Superhero Birthday Party Theme
This year has been the year our son discovered Spiderman. EVERYTHING has been Spiderman themed this year so it was pretty obvious what I should incorporate into his party this year. I didn’t want to go directly on the nose with everything decorated as Spiderman. I created a fun, colorful party where all the super heroes were welcome.
The story to go along with this year’s theme is a group of superheroes are invited to the superhero training headquarters to train in superhero games, eat delicious desserts, and celebrate Super Connor turning four!
Superhero Party Costume
We love to do a little pretend play and photoshoot to include a themed photo with the invitations. This year we had to keep it simple because I had a newborn in one hand.
While wearing a cape and mask, I had Connor lay on a blue sheet (see photo below). I photographed him from above. Then I then drew a little cityscape scene in the computer and worked my Photoshop magic to create a comic book style photo for our invitation photo this year.
Superhero Party Invitations
A call was made to fellow superheroes to mask up and fly over to a top secret location to celebrate Super Connor’s 4th birthday.
For this year’s invitation I wanted the design to be funky with bright colors and fun fonts, giving a comic book vibe. So I designed a long rectangle invitation that fit into a blue coin envelope. I made my own lightning bolt pattern and printed it off to be the envelope liner.
I folded the rectangle invitation into an accordion to fit it inside the envelope.
Superhero Party Cake
Brent made the cake again this year. A simple vanilla icing on vanilla cake per the birthday boy’s request.
The cake is sitting on a bright lime green cake stand that fit the theme perfectly. The bottom of the cake is covered in these adorable lighning bolt and star sprinkles.
I designed and laser cut the custom Super Connor cake topper.
It seemed on theme to have a number 4 sparkler to create a WOW moment.
Superhero Party Treats
The dessert table inside the superhero training headquarters.
I love using our coffee bar for the dessert table and the giant chalkboard above it for parties. I designed these graphics, including the party logo, on the computer and then traced them in chalk onto the large chalkboard.
Brent once again did a fantastic job on the balloon garland which showcased our bright and cheerful color scheme.
These fun popcorn boxes displayed on a blue scalloped stand were the perfect portion size for a sweet and salty popcorn and M&M mix.
We made Rice krispy treats cut into lightning bolt shapes with a lightning bolt cookie cutter. They were individually wrapped and available in goody bags for guests to take home.
Our 4 year old is obsessed with ice cream. A super sundae bar was a must have party activity. To make it a little more “pandemic friendly”, we put individual portions of ice cream in cute dessert cups and stored them on ice in an acrylic beverage tub.
Toppings were also individually stored in disposable cups allowing guests to grab the toppings they wanted and bring them outside to assemble their sundae.
Kids (and the adults too) love a good silly straw. These also served as a favor for the guests to take home with them. I always like to use reusable straws at parties as favors since we have stopped using plastic straws.
This battery operated neon lightning bolt was an exciting touch to the dessert table. It brought the comic book vibe of the superhero training headquarters to life.
Two metallic blue fringe curtains (trimmed down) perfectly covered the wood base of our coffee bar tying the entire theme of the superhero party dessert table together .
Superhero Party Games
At the superhero training headquarters, superheroes practice their skills. Web shooting and shield slinging are must have superhero party games.
In the shield slinging practice, superheroes practice knocking down the villain’s evil lair with their shields. These large cardboard blocks and mini discs are all you need for this fun game!
The only mini discs I could find had NFL stickers on them which were not on theme. Boo. But they were super easy to customize. The NFL stickers came off very easily.
I purchased these glossy round stickers that were the same size and designed my own sticker template with the logo and colors of our party theme on them.
Cute custom mini shields ready for slinging!
If you are going to hang with Spiderman, you are going to need to spend some time doing a little web shooting target practice. There are lots of versions of this game out there. I kind of tweaked them to form my own based on supplies we had and where we were going to be playing this game.
For my web shooter game I made targets on the computer and printed them out and cut out the inner circle. I also cut out some little villain characters and used some of the extra dessert cups from the sundae bar.
I glued the villain character into the bottom of the plastic dessert cups and then put the cup through the cutout whole of the target.
I purchased streamer string to match each of the colors of my targets. I designed my own web shooter wraps to also match and attached to them the streamer string cans.
I mounted the targets to our fence with tape.
I had one target and one web shooter for each guest. Each guest had a designated color. We played in a couple rounds. The first person to fill up their cup and cover the villain with silly string won!. This game was a huge hit with everyone.
*FYI: We did this in an area where we did not have landscaping but I promptly washed it off our fence. I am not sure if it would permanently stick or not.
superhero party photo booth
What is a superhero party without a cityscape background? That is exactly what we created for our superhero party photo booth.
Every party since he turned 2, Connor and I tackle a cardboard decor piece for his party. It is something we work on together that is always larger in scale than we plan and far from perfect but it is always a special memory. Luckily, social distancing with a newborn gives you plenty of cardboard boxes to use for a city structure.
We stacked and wrapped our boxes in black kraft paper to create our buildings.
We put our light blue paper behind the buildings to give off sunny day blue sky vibe. And hung white tissue paper pom poms from fishing wire as clouds.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s Super Connor!
I had to make him his own custom Super Connor shirt.
All superheroes were welcome. Um, also can we just comment on the fact that my brother could totally have a side gig dressing up as Thor for little kids birthday parties.
If you are throwing a superhero birthday party soon, I hope our party could provide you inspiration!

✨ Party Time ✨
Due to the Coronavirus (this party was thrown in 2020) and having a newborn, we had to get a little creative when it came to safely celebrating our son’s 4th birthday party this year. It was small (just us and grandparents coming at different times), mostly outside, and some creative masks were involved. It’s been a weird year.
Our son has been a trooper with all the new challenges 2020 brought so we still wanted this pandemic era party to be over the top and special for him. This year he has been very into Spiderman, Captain America, Hulk, Black Panther, etc. so it was an easy decision to throw him a super 4 year old superhero bash.
