When Christmas time rolled around in December of 2020 I was shopping around for a Baby’s First Christmas ornament for our daughter. I wanted one that was personalized, made of wood, timeless looking and matched the theme of our daughter’s nursery. That’s not too much to ask, right? 😉
I obviously could not find one that matched the design in my head so I made one for our daughter. Then, I made a new one for our son with his birth year and a bear shape to match his nursery theme. I liked that they matched.
Just for fun we started selling the custom personalized Baby’s First Christmas ornaments I designed and made on Etsy and I was shocked at how well they sold.
I loved making personalized and custom ornaments for others. So the next year we added a few more categories and then this year I have designed over 100 new ornament designs that are available in our shop Moon Rock Prints.
My kids first Christmas ornaments are very special to me because they act as little time-capsules that I pull out at Christmas each year. Looking at them I am immediately flooded with memories of their first Christmas.
I decided for this year I wanted a simple but beautiful way to showcase them as Christmas decor so I decided to frame them. Below are the supplies I used to create my framed Christmas Ornaments decor.
In case you were wondering why both ornaments say 2023… The ornaments photographed and shown in this post are switched with example ornaments we made instead of our children’s actual ornaments for privacy reasons. They look exactly the same just the names and dates are switched.

Steps:
1 | For this project I purchased two square frames from Target and of course used our super adorable (if I do say so myself) personalized handcrafted wood ornaments.
2 | To begin I cut down one side of my uncut white Matboard from Michael’s to the correct size I needed using a box cutter and a cutting mat.
3 | My square frames were 8″x8″ but I ended up having to trim them just under 8″x8″ to be able to fit in the frame. Having a straight edge or a ruler helps keep the cutting line straight.
4 | Next, I cut down the other side of my mat so I had a square mat.
5 | Then, I removed the glass from the frame.
6 | I placed my ornament centered on the mat and marked with a pencil the location I wanted to hang my ornament.
7 | Next, I used a 2″ reach hole punch to punch two holes where I made my marks on the mat. You could also only punch one hole and hang it that way if you like that look better.
8 | I threaded the twine through the hole and taped it to the back of the mat.
9 | Once the ornament was secured to the mat I put it back in my square frame.
10 | So cute! The framed Christmas ornament turns into beautiful and unique 3D Christmas art.
We decided to hang our ornaments in our library but they would also look beautiful on a mantle decorated for Christmas. I love the simple and beautiful way of showcasing sentimental framed Christmas ornaments as elevated Christmas decor.
If you are looking to take your personalized gift game to a new level, I think framing a personalized ornament would make a beautiful gift for a loved one or friend. And it doesn’t have to be a Christmas ornament. A framed athlete ornament or couples ornament could be framed art all year long!
