This year we had a mermaid party for our daughter’s second birthday. Check out all of our mermaid party details below. From the under the sea party treats to a giant shell photo booth, we had a blast shell-abrating our little mermaid’s 2nd birthday!

Mermaid Birthday Party Theme
Ever since she watched The Little Mermaid, everything has been about “lil merman” (how Zoey adorably says little mermaid). Something just clicked with her and the movie so we decided an under the sea mermaid birthday party was the perfect way to celebrate her turning two! Which is extra fun for me because I too had a little mermaid birthday way back in the day. Above is the party logo I designed to incorporate into the party details.
Mermaid Birthday Costume
For Zoey’s annual birthday dress up photo shoot we purchased a little mermaid bathing suit and I made the felt flower for her hair. We photographed her in my parent’s pool.
Mermaid Birthday Party Invitations
For the envelopes I chose light blue foil envelopes. I lined the inside of the envelopes with mermaid wrapping paper. I printed bubbles on the front of the envelope and then attached stickers I made for a cute whimsical touch.
I used my Silhouette Portrait cutting machine to create a three piece shell shaped invitation similar to my son’s space invitation. For the front of the envelope I printed and cut a shell shape out of pearlescent pale purple card stock.
The middle piece is the invitation with watercolor mermaid tails and a watercolor font. The third piece is Zoey’s mermaid photo also cut out in a shell shape. The three pieces are held together with a paper fastener I painted purple.
Mermaid Birthday Cake
Brent made Zoey’s cake. It was a small personal size vanilla cake with ombre frosting displayed on a small white scalloped cake stand.
We added purple colored chocolate shells that we made using our little seashell baking molds. They were super easy to use and turned out really cute.
For the top of the cake I made a paper seashell 2 cake topper and added one of Zoey’s The Little Mermaid toys to as well. When it was time to sing happy birthday, we swapped the little mermaid for two tall iridescent blue candles.
Mermaid Party Desserts
We converted out coffee bar into the mermaid dessert table with this sparkly sequins table cloth that resembles a mermaid tail. An iridescent curtain topped with a balloon garland filled with pastel purple balloons and blue/green balloons served as the backdrop.
The shiny blue green coral pieces were a DIY project. I decorated the table with various shells and The Little Mermaid toys.
I made these adorable clam cookies by putting purple icing between two Nilla Wafers and adding a white sixlet candy in the middle to represent a pearl.
Connor helped me make these cute little crabs out of orange slice candy and peach ring candy.
All of our treats were displayed on these gorgeous ceramic purple scalloped three tier stands. I love these so much! They are very nice quality.
We made our own tie-dye cake pops! I am really proud of these. They were actually really easy to make with our cake popsicle mold and soooo yummy.
Another dessert we made were these mini cheesecake cups in cute plastic cups that we topped with whipped cream, a chocolate mermaid tail, and mermaid sprinkles. They were a hit at the party!
We made the chocolate mermaid tails using a mermaid tail mold.
The dessert plates matched perfectly! Purple and gold shell plates looked so cute on the table.
Mermaid Party Favors
I thought I was buying purple seashell cups but some wires got crossed and I was sent these blue and clear seashell cups instead. They still worked fine. I filled them with chocolate kisses and added a thank you tag I made that matched the decor. They were cute favors for guests to take home with them.
Mermaid Party Food and Drink
The kids favorite part of the food was this kid-friendly snack tray filled with ocean themed snacks and treats served by Flounder.
I tried to balance the fruit to candy ratio but I am sure all the candy went first. ha.
Mermaid Party Decor
The cutest foil mermaid balloon.
Jellyfish paper lanterns hanging from the ceiling to make it feel like we are under water.
I made Zoey’s birthday logo into a sign to display over the cake.
Lots of shiny mermaid balloons are a must at a mermaid birthday party!
I set up a little table where guests could get an ocean themed temporary tattoo or make their own mermaid bracelet with a mermaid bead kit and a letter bead kit.
The temporary mermaid tattoos were displayed in a giant shell.
The little girls loved making bracelets.
I made a little coral shaped stand out of cardboard to display Zoey’s mermaid photos.
Mermaid Party Photo Booth
I had so much fun designing the photo booth where guests could come get their photo with Sebastian the crab.
Brent made the large cardboard shell backdrop. The clear bubble balloons hanging from the ceiling really gave off a cool effect of being under the sea.
If you are throwing a mermaid birthday party soon, I hope our party could provide you inspiration!

✨ Party Time ✨
Zoey had so much fun at her party! She loved pretending she was under the sea. We had a blast watching her sing and dance and run around.
We ended the mermaid party with a backyard full of bubbles thanks to the most epic and crazy bubble machine we have ever had. Plus, lots of swimming and splashing in the giant rainbow pool!
