I’m excited to share something a little different today, a tour of a room not in our house. My parents live on the lake and wanted to create a nautical and kid friendly guest room in their house for when the grandkids stay over.
We made a few special custom pieces for the room. I thought the room came together cute and I wanted to share a tour of this bright and cheery nautical kid’s bedroom.

Nautical Kid’s Bedroom Inspiration
My mom did an amazing job decorating this room. I enjoyed consulting on design choices and making the custom artwork pieces with Brent.
One area I helped choose was the paint color on the wall. I am the queen of Swimming by Sherwin-Williams.
We used this whimsical whale bedding set as the inspiration for the color pallet in this room. It even comes with that cute whale throw pillow.
On the opposite wall from the bed is a storage cube organizer shelf where my mom stores diapers, blankets, towels, and some extra PJs (in case of spur of the moment sleep overs) in these wave and navy storage bins.
I love this large wire “Ride the Wave” sign that ties in well with the nautical and playful theme of the room.
I found this adorable seagull at Target’s dollar spot last summer and picked it up with this room in mind.
Blackout curtains are a must in a room for a toddler. It keeps them thinking it is night time longer.
This room already had a built in desk so we kept it simple and just added a lantern table lamp and this adorable navy kids desk chair.
My mom also has a basket of plush fish friends who are in need of snuggling.
Brent and I made this wood no wake zone sign to hang over the bed.
My mom will usually read a bedtime story or two in this rattan barrel chair and then Connor will turn on the stars on the whale storytelling baby sleep soother before crawling into bed when he sleeps over here. He LOVES the whale. It also plays music, white noise, and reads stories.
You may have seen our I Love You More Than All The Fish in the Sea Prints in our Etsy shop. Well, those were actually made specifically for this room! Brent painted a few watercolor fish and then I designed these two prints and had them printed and framed for above the bed.
I had a lot of fun helping my mom with this nautical kid’s bedroom. She did an awesome job picking out a lot of the decor pieces too. I have linked to the sources for a lot of the items in this room down below.
If you have the space, I think it is a fun idea to have a special playful designed room dedicated to making the grandkids feel comfortable staying over and I think this nautical kid’s bedroom does just that.
