We are in the process of updating our bed in our bedroom. This year has been rough on our bedroom between all of us being home all the time and welcoming a new baby and all the chaos that brings. Our bed situation really reflected that.
After 11 years (I know, it has been too long) it was time for us to upgrade to a new mattress.
It was an exciting day for the whole family when we ditched our old queen mattress and upgraded to a king size Purple Hybrid Premier Mattress.
There are a lot of mattress options out there these days but we were interested in the Purple mattress and intrigued to see what their Purple Grid™ is all about.
If you haven’t heard of Purple, their mattresses have a one of a kind hyper-elastic gel Grid that flexes to support your position and then springs back into place as you move during the night.
Our Bed Before
Our mattress was one Brent got when he was in college.
This is kind of embarrassing but our old “base” was super sketchy. It was made up of wood slats that were more than 3” apart.
Purple recommends a flat, sturdy surface with slats less than 3” apart to get the most out of your mattress so we bought and assembled a new sturdy king size platform base in preparation of the mattress’s arrival.
Our Review of the Purple Hybrid Premier Mattress
Okay, let’s get to it! We are excited to share our experience sleeping on a Purple mattress for a couple weeks.
The Purple mattress came rolled up in a large purple bag. The Hybrid Premier King Size mattress was very heavy to get out of the bag so it was definitely a two person job to get it out and onto the base.
It comes vacuum sealed so once you cut the plastic it takes its shape and expands.
Brent was a little hesitant at first because he was worried it would feel like memory foam mattresses he has slept on in the past. He isn’t a fan of memory foam because they are dense and he says they feel like he is sinking into quicksand and can’t move. He was relieved and very impressed with how “springy” it felt.
Our four year old was equally impressed with the flexing the Grid provided.
The first night I slept on the new mattress I could tell it felt different than our old mattress. Our old pillow top mattress was very soft so in comparison I thought this one felt harder at first. However, old mattress had a sinkhole in the middle of the bed that I would always roll into.
One side of my body was always higher than the other which wasn’t very comfortable.
After a few nights sleeping on the mattress, my body adjusted to the way the elastic get Grid felt and I like how it somehow feels both supportive but also comfy. I wake up feeling better because the pressure points in my back are protected.
Purple mattresses are great at regulating temperature. So if you dislike sleeping hot like both Brent and I you will appreciate the air channels built into the Grid and the breathable foam that keeps you from overheating. There is nothing worse than sleeping hot so I am sure we will appreciate this feature during the hot Texas summers.
Where are my weird sleepers at? I am what you call an active sleeper. I am constantly changing to different sleeping positions throughout the night. So far I like that the Hybrid Premier’s thicker gel Grid moves with me throughout the night keeping me comfortable no matter what position I am in.
So our overall consensus on the Purple Hybrid Premier? We like it!
Just going from a queen size mattress to a king size mattress is life changing in itself when you always have a child crawling into your bed in the middle of the night. They can get away with a lot more because between the ample amount of room and the gel grid I haven’t even felt them crawling into bed with us.
I would say it was worth switching to the Purple Hybrid Mattress. After two weeks I have gotten used to it and am sleeping really well (if you don’t count getting up with a baby in the middle of the night but I won’t hold that against the mattress.)
If you are concerned about buying a mattress online without being able to test it, they do offer a 100-night-trial.
